Montefiascone - Viterbo 18 km, 23 an 24 October

24 oktober 2022 - Viterbo, Italië

Yesterday only a short trip going downward from Montefiascone to Viterbo. It was cloudy and windy and a good day for walking along the Via Cassia. It's an old (150 BC) road built by the Romans as a main route north from Rome. This particular stretch of the road still had the old pavement of stones as made by the Romans. Amazing to walk on the same road and stones as the Roman legions and emperors did more than 2000 years ago. See the pictures.

Booked myself a nice spahotel on the outskirts of town for a rest day. I've got a terrace in the garden to rest my feet and enjoy the sunshine. As the hotel provided a bike I managed to visit the site of 2500 year old Etruscan graves which they had dug i the soft vulcanic tuffstone in an out of the way valley. Very interesting to see.

Also I had to visit the old Roman/medieval town of Viterbo to see the sites including the papal Palace and say farewell to the Tuulla and Yarri who have become dear camino friends, but had to leave for Rome and Finland tomorrow as they had commitments at home. I have more or less promised to come and visit them in Vasa in Finland some time. I actually did a lot of things to day like I went to the barber for a hair cut and bought some new shirts and socks as the ones I had had big holes in them.

Tomorrow a short trip to vetralla.
