Sessa Aurunca - Teano 15 November 2022

15 november 2022 - Teano, Italië

Yesterday I literary took a raincheck and stayed put as it was raining badly all morning. In the afternoon the weather cleared so I had a look around town and visited the  Cathedral and the Roman amfitheatre which incidentally was closed for the season but looked in good shape with a great view towards the far away sea. I also had a look at the local Castello which is supposed to be a museum. As the ticket lady was fast asleep behind her telephone I just went in and had a look around. Not much to see as the building was under some sort of restauration. Still managed to take some nice pictures though. As I had plenty of time I cooked some pasta Bolognese in the evening instead of going out to eat. Suffice to say that it was quite a mediocre meal but still, it filled the stomach.

To day I headed for Teano, only 15 km away. I experienced the trail leading away from Sessa as one of the most beautiful exits of any town I have left behind. There was this narrow hollow path through a dense forrest with sandstone walls reaching up 2 to 3 meters in places with overhanging trees and bushes and in the misty morning air it gave a special atmosphere difficult to catch on a phone camera. Then there were the views and the birds chirping and making the silence even more pronounced. Furtheron the trail went through the Parco Regionale Rocamonfina and led me along oak and chestnut wooded hillsides with beautiful faraway views. With optimal visibility I'm sure one could have looked as far as Naples.

Walking on some country road nearing to day's destination I suddenly felt something touching my leg which gave me a quite a fright and it appeared 3 stray dogs had snug up om me without me hearing anything. Luckily they were nice dogs, did some more sniffing and went on their way. All these loose dogs look unkempt but well fed supposedly from all the domestic waste that people either put in plastic bags outside their houses/fences or throw away alongside the roads.

Passed this house with solar panels on the roof which I incidentally also have on our house in Norway and it made me think I haven't seen many of those in Italy which seems strange in a country where the sun shines in abundance.  Italians are these days feeling an energy crises and they have turned down the heater in the houses and switched off the lights. For a relatively small investment they could have electricity in abundance almost for free ☀️

Upon arrival i Teano I had a quick look around town with its narrow streets, squares and churches, small shops and bars like so many of these vilkages. A little outside the centre I checked into this BnB Moro Bianca which means white mulberry or witte moerbei in Dutch or morbær in Norwegian. This because they had this big mulberry tree dominating the garden. I met another Italian guest of the house called Max and he was this nice guy speaking English very well and we decided to cook pasta with tomato sauce and onion the Corsican way. I got some sausages and a litre of red wine in a box (1,50 Euro which Max proclaimed they only use for cooking!) from a small alimentari and we had a tasty and pleasant meal together.

To morrow onwards to Roccaromana. Heavy rain has been forecasted in the morning, but no matter, this time I'll be walking.
