Castel Gandolfo - Velletri 4th of November 2022

4 november 2022 - Velletri, Italië

To night the wind was blowing such that even the windows in my bedroom opened up and it rained a lot. This morning it started raining again when I left Castel Gandolfo but nothing serious so I soon packed my rain gear away again. The path took me through a dense forrest on the inside of the rim of the crater lake for about 10 km to the mountain village of Nemi. A nice place for a cappucho stop. Then another 11 km to Velletri where a BnB Casa di Ciccio is waiting. Again a dense wood high above another but smaller crater lake. Mainly chestnut trees made sure I didn't have a view of anything but trees and undergrowth. As autumn also has come to southern Italy, the paths are thickly strewn with brown leaves and chestnuts. The Via Francigena is not so well marked here as north of Rome and with all the paths in the woods it is easy to get lost if you don't keep an eye on the phone and the satellite track. I got lost a bit at least once and had to return a couple of 100 meters to get back on the track. Having met nobody on the trail all day I felt quite alone. Made me ask myself what I was doing here and the only answer that came to mind was that I wanted to do this. Never thought that I would basically be all by my self all the time though. I Probably get in a better mood when the weather turns for the better ☀️

Velletri is not a town to write home about so I won't, but the BnB I'm in is rather nice with a warm welcome. See what's cooking for dinner in town this evening.
