Monte San Biago - Itre 9 November 2022
9 november 2022 - Itri, Italië
To day breakfast in the BnB restaurant wasn't much to brag about. A cappucho and a croissant was basically it, however quite normal in Italy. They do love sweets all day long. I started walking at 9 O'clock and took a good short cut initially for about 6 boring kilometers along the railroad and another 6 over small country roads to get back on the Via Francigena and right away I also was back on the Via Appia again towards Itri. This part of the Via Appia was built by Appius Claudius in the 4 th century BC and long stretches are still in tact. As there now are so few people on the road and the tourist season is over the accommodations offered will open up for you, but expect cold and damp houses as the heating is invariably turned off. ( Due to energy crisis Italians are by decree not allowed to turn the heating on until 28th of November I was told by one BnB owner!) Some times the water heater has just been switched on and I have to wait for warm water. Anyway I'm not complaining and glad for an affordable place to stay for one night.
Otherwise quite an uneventful day without meeting any people. If something interesting comes up when I go into the centre of Itri to eat something I'll let you know.
Tomorrow on to Formia which actually is not that far away, but the VF let's you walk 10 km more via Gaeta to get you off the main road.
Enjoy this amazing chance to leave those things in your wake - for a little longer.
Goedkopere stroom!)
