Finally arrived in Roncevalles at 17:15 hrs. No doubt the hardest day of my Camino. A sunny and hot day with at times very little skade on the road or path. The first 20 km is just going up and up and up from an altitude of 200m to 1440m at the highest point going steeply down to ca 800 m at Roncevalles. Endlesly it would seem and at times quite steep. Luckily there are a few water filling stations underway and I filled my 1,5 ltr camelback 3 times just to keep me sufficiently hydrated in the heat. Sander also managed the hike well and kept an eye out for two young American girls we met on the way.
Even though it was hardship, it was a walk through a beautiful changing mountain scenery. All very green and other wise colourful. The last 6 km down to the big cloister in Roncevalles was very steep but luckily shaded by a large beech wood
The pilgrim facility at Roncevalles is a big ''factory'' with 183 beds reserved for pilgrims. 8 € for a bed and 10€ for a meal. Breakfast was sold out and we'll have to go to the next place 3km away to get us breakfast to morrow morning. We are sleeping on a bunkbed in a 16 bed crowded room, so we'll see how that goes....
Dinner at 20:30. We are both starving. ...

    Thx for all supporting Comment. Ja Elisabeth, in een keer want we vinden beiden die eerste 8 km naar Orrisson wat te kort voor een dag en we waren nog heel fris natuurlijk. Was voor Sander beter geweest in 2 etappes, maar dat wisten we toen nog niet.
