23 april Limoges - St Martin-le-Vieux 23 km E

23 april 2017

To day we deviated from the route in the book as we (Janick et moi) decided to avoid the long way out of town and rather follow the river Le Vienne for a while. We joined the route again in Isle. Halfway we caught up with two dutchmen, everybody call the ''bouwvakkers'' and we sat down together at a cafe-restaurant for a cup of coffee and afterwords a glass of very nice white wine in the sunshine. According to the Dutch book of the ''Pelgrims weg van Vezelay. ...'' there is no accommodation in St Martin le Vieux, but my pilgrim friend Janick has a book called Miam Miam Dodo (recommended if you read French) which contains a lot more addresses! Here is a really good Chambre d'Hote + 33555391984 for a reasonable price if you are two, and it saves walking all the way to Flavignac in one go. (Aanrader!)
A pretty hot afternoon with about 25 degrees C. It seems like no matter how far the daily trip being, 20, 25 or 30 km, it seems the last 5 km is always evenly hard. Very strange, but I guess it is all in the mind.
Our hoste have dinner ready for us at 20:00 hrs, so I wish you all a nice evening.

To day 31546 steps and 1615 calories.
Bonne nuit.

John and I had a look at the current statistics. It says that 56% of the 5176 pilgrims in March this year are men, and 94% of the pilgrims do the Camino by foot. Only 0,14%, however, are said to start out from Vezelay (7 persons)! No more than 10% of the pilgrims are aged over 60, which could discourage us, but you prove that it can be done!! Obviously, it is easier to find fellow Dutch pilgrims than Norwegian ones, anyway, you seem to be lucky finding good company! We are curious about the food along the way – will it be better and less expensive in Spain, or the other way around? You will probably get a good chance to compare! Our pilgrim book tells about pilgrims eating a lot of spaghetti to get enough energy for the next day – anyhow, you need extra calories for the road! By the way, please tell if you get impressions on the French election. According to the news it is a very close race between Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron – but we figure you won’t see any them racing along the Camino! Happy walking wishes from Inger Johanne and John

Always fun with tatistics, but they have their limitations. A lot more people starting in april and later. It is correct that communal institutions here in France keep statistics of pilgrims. For my part I haven't seen that many women along the route so far and in addition I would say that the majority is over 60. I have in restaurants mainly eten steaks and chips which keep me going. Sometimes when we have stayed in a Chambre d'hote \ B&B with out there being any other alternativer you get served what they've got and that is not always sufficient for my large apetite. As you say I need the extra calories.
